Bhubaneswar, July 6: Music lovers had a good time at the three-day Hindustani classical music festival that came to an end here on July 3.

Organised by the city-based All-Odisha Hindustani Artistes’ Association, the festival was hosted at Jayadev Bhavan. Senior artistes of Hindustani classical music, mostly from within the city, performed on all the three days.

The first day opened with Karunakara Nayak’s solo vocal rendition. He was accompanied by Bijay Kumar Das on the tabla. After the crowd was regaled with intricate ragas by Karunakara, came an enthusiastic sarod recital by Sandhip Kumar Rout. The sarod, along with tabla played by the popular Kulamani Sahoo, received a thunderous applause from the audience. Other attractions of the opening day were tabla recital by Chittaranjan Mohapatra, solo vocal by Pratima Panda and tabla by Ushab Swain and Biswanath Moharana, apart from a flute recital by Parsuram Das.

The second evening saw young vocalist guru Kunja Bihari Nayak, also accompanied by tabla player Bijaya Kumar Das, perform an intense repertoire. The duo started with raga Malkauns and went on to present some celebrated devotional songs. Jiban Prakash Das’s sitar recital was enchanting with the Debananda Sutar on the tabla.

Later, Bijaya Kumar Das also performed solo. A violin recital by Amit Kumar Das was among the day’s highlights.

Next day, Chandan Jena’s scintillating voice gave the perfect start to the programme. A classical jugalbandi between Biswamohan Mishra’s guitar and Biswaranjan Nanda’s tabla followed next. Jabahar Mishra’s flute was another highlight of the evening.

“We hardly get to see such versatile musical conventions in the city. It was a wonderful experience to be here,” said Satakadi Hota, a renowned litterateur. The festival aims to let music lovers know the talented musicians of the present generation, said Harihara Rath, secretary of the organising association. “More than 30 artistes got a platform to perform before the city audience,” he said.
