Berhampur, June 25: Tension prevailed on the Bhanja Bihar campus of Berhampur University following a clash between two groups of students last evening.
One first-year student has been admitted to MKCG hospital in the city with serious injuries, police said.
"Some students and outsiders attacked me with sharp weapons and lathis when we were on the way to Chhatrapur from the hostel No. 2. Former students' union president Bhabani Kanta Sahu led the attackers," said Bipin Chandra Palai, the injured student.
Gopalpur police have arrested Debabrata Patnaik, former secretary of the dramatic association of the varsity, for allegedly attacking Bipin.
The police swung into action after Bipin had lodged an FIR at Gopalpur police station against six students and outsiders, including Bhabani.
Bipin, a resident of Karan Sahi in Ganjam town, stays at hostel No. 1. "Bhabani brandishing a pistol threatened me to leave the university campus," Bipin said. Bipin's friends, who were on two bikes, ran away from the spot.
Students' union president Deepak Pradhan said some students and outsiders, led by Bhabani, quarrelled with them when they were standing in front of the Rushikulya Hostel last evening. "They attacked Bipin, who suffered injury on his head and hand. We immediately rushed Bipin to the Bhanja Bihar outpost and the police arranged to shift him to MKCG," Deepak said.
The police have recovered two bikes from the spot. However, they as well as the university authorities are tight-lipped about the entire incident.
