National Institute of Technology, Rourkela |
Bhubaneswar, Sept. 18: Industries and institutes in coastal Odisha can hope for training from the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela.
Talks are on for the institute to be allotted about 2.5 acres in Bhubaneswar to set up an extension centre to run various courses for students and industry personnel.
Chief secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra discussed the issue with National Institute of Technology (NIT) authorities today.
“An extension centre in Bhubaneswar will go a long way in reaching out to the industries and institutes in coastal Odisha,” NIT director Sunil Kumar Sarangi said.
The institute has superior facilities, modern equipment and competent staff, but there is an absence of adequate communication with other parts of Odisha, said one official.
“The institute plans to utilise the proposed centre to offer continuing education courses to personnel from industries and academia located in Odisha and other parts of the country. It proposes to offer a complete postgraduate programme in distance mode with limited classroom teaching facility through the centre,” the director said.
Besides seeking land in Bhubaneswar, the authorities have also asked the government for allocation of 260 hectares in Rourkela for expansion of the institute and a second campus.
Issues concerning the institute, including delay in implementation of a water supply scheme to the campus, construction of a peripheral road for better communication and so on, were also discussed.
From this academic session onwards, the premier institute has added three new courses — BTech in food process technology, BTech in architecture and an integrated five-year MSc in life sciences with an intake of 30 each.
A total of 90 seats were added this year to the previous 810 seats taking the total number of seats to 900.
