Children's village

SOS Children's Villages, Bhubaneswar, recently celebrated its founding father Hermann Gmeiner's birthday with much fanfare. There was a cultural programme during which settled SOS youths shared their experiences. SOS Day is dedicated to distribution of prizes to children who have done well academically and in co-curricular activities.

Over 300 people, including the children, mothers of the students, employees, long-standing sponsors, corporate donors and other dignitaries took part in the celebration. A guided tour of the children's village and the evening prayer made the event more memorable.

Felicitation

Shree Krishna International School, Bhubaneswar, recently held a felicitation ceremony for its Class-X students. School chairman Pabitra Kumar Routray, while inaugurating the programme, said the school had achieved 100 per cent success in the Class-X examination.

About 50 per cent of the students scored CGPA 10 and the rest scored CGPA 9. A cultural programme was also organised.

Rath yatra

The world famous rath yatra was celebrated at Shrivani Khetra of the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, Bhubaneswar, on June 25 amid religious fervour and gaiety.

More than 30,000 devotees took part in pulling the three decorated chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. The three colourful wooden chariots were decorated with festoons and flowers, appliqué and mural paintings. The temporary kiosks, food kiosks, minabazar and so on created a colourful atmosphere near Gundicha temple.

During the nine-day festival, a bhajan samaroh is being held every evening near the temple. Devotees from nearby localities come to the temple for darshan of the three deities.

Games promotion

A promotional campaign to popularise the 22nd Asian Athletics Championship among students was held at Sai International School on June 28. Around 3,000 students, along with teachers and staff members took part in the event.

The children and the student band gave the games mascot, Olly, a rousing reception at the Indraprastha Auditorium. To create awareness and familiarise the students with the mega event, two promotional videos were screened, providing a detailed perspective into the event. A troupe of singers performed on stage at the event. Olly masks, stickers and badges were also distributed among students.

Basketball champs

Rudrakanta Sahoo of the Wolverines netted 33 points in the title clash to power his team to the title in the Mother's Basketball League hosted by Mother's Public School on the school ground. The Wolverines defeated the Warriors in the final. Rudrakanta was adjudged the best player, while Hardik Pattnaik of the Avengers and Sidharth Guru of the Warriors received the emerging and valuable player awards, respectively. A number of senior basketball players of the state attended the event to encourage the students.
