Ashort film produced by the sports and youth affairs department was shown to students of Rama Devi Women’s College recently. The 90-minute film comprised an introductory song and was made as a docudrama. The film is about active citizenship that is required for students to fulfil their duties towards the country and society as a citizen. The film emphasised on keeping localities clean, wearing helmets, not using headphones and mobile phones while driving, saying no to corruption, eve teasing and many other social evils. The sports and youth affairs department officials asked all universities and colleges to screen the film and get some feedback from the students and create awareness among them on various issues such as sanitation, security for women, road safety, drug abuse, ragging and so on. 

Nanotechnology meet

Scientists, academicians, experts and researchers from across the country converged at a two-day national workshop at the Siksha-O-Anusandhan (SOA) University on Saturday and Sunday to discuss various aspects of development of materials and processes for sustainable energy generation and protection of environment. The workshop on the development of nanomaterials for energy, environment and sustainability was organised by the varsity’s centre for nanoscience and nanotechnology. Students interacted with the scientists and gathered knowledge about various subjects. The centre has already developed a few prototypes for the successful conversion of carbon dioxide into solar fuel.

Hear-to-see software

A 15-day orientation programme on non-visual desktop access screen reader for the Odia-speaking population concluded on Wednesday at the Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Handicapped in Bhubaneswar. The software would help the visually challenged people to read materials on the Internet. Around 20 college-going students took part in the training. The programme was organised by directorate for welfare of persons with disabilities in association with the National Association for the Blind, Delhi. The students shared their experiences about the programme and suggested further improvements of the software in terms of pronunciation by involving the experts of Odia language.

Physics seminar

A national seminar on the advances in multifunctional materials was organised by the physics department of the Betnoti College in Mayurbhanj to sensitise students on the research prospects of the subject. The two-day event, sponsored by the University Grants Commission, began on Sunday. Professors, academicians and researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, universities and research institutes shared their knowledge on topics such as harvesting electricity from the vibrations in everyday life. The students learn a lot from the experts. While veterans such as R.N.P. Choudhury, a former professor of physics from IIT Kharagpur, and P.K. Mohapatra, former vice-chancellor of the West Bengal University of Technology, spoke on the recent advances in the field of material sciences. S.K. Srivastava, an associate professor from IIT Kharagpur, also shared his views regarding the subject.

New establishment

A new building complex of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College was inaugurated on Saturday. District collector Sanatan Mallick inaugurated the Rs 3.65-crore establishment, known as PG Block. FM University vice-chancellor Shibaprasad Adhikary also attended the event. 

“The college was facing trouble accommodating the students. The new building would cater to the needs of the postgraduate students,” said Sudarsan Nayak, principal of the college. The teaching and non-teaching staff and students of the college were also present at the event.

Annual event

The students of Lajpat Rai Law College, Sambalpur, have been busy preparing for their annual event, which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday. The two-day event will conclude on Thursday. At least 30 cultural items will be presented on the occasion. Eminent artists have been invited to perform there. The students will also stage a play. Earlier, several competitions, including debates, essay writing, singing were organised in the college. The students, who have excelled in those competitions, will be awarded at the annual event.

Labour conference

The national trade union’s conference on labour law reform, industrial relations and industry development was organised at the National Law University on Monday. The conference was organised with support from International Labour Organisation’s Bureau for Workers’ Activities. The conference was specifically designed to sensitise the students on different perspectives of current labour law reforms, industrial issues and problems faced by the labourers.

Renewal of status

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has renewed the autonomous status of the Khallikote College for another five years. Set up in 1878, the college got the autonomous status in 1990. Around 5,000 students are currently enrolled in the college. After availing the status, the institute had been independently conducting its examinations and would get grant of Rs 20 lakh per annum, according to the UGC norms. The college offers Plus III and postgraduate courses in 20 subjects of science, arts and commerce streams. MPhil courses have also been introduced for eight subjects. It runs six self-financing courses as well.

Admissions on

Institute of Health Management and Research, Bangalore, has started receiving applications for a two-year postgraduate course in health and hospital management and admissions for the coming session and it would continue till June. The institute conducted a conclave in Bhubaneswar last week to attract the students of the state to take admission into its courses for the coming session. An official said that graduates from any stream could apply for this postgraduate programme. Admissions will be based on their scores in management tests such as MAT, CAT, CMAT, ATMA or XAT. Graduates with two years of work experience can apply directly.
