Bhubaneswar, Aug. 28: The state would receive heavy rainfall for the next two days as the low pressure formed on the Bay of Bengal is centred over south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh.

A meteorology official in the city said several parts of the state received rain today and it would continue for a few more days.

Besides there are chances of another low pressure being formed in the region on September 1, and that would trigger further rain in the state.

“The current low pressure is stationed over the Kalingapatnam region in Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha. This will cause rain in most parts of this region. Besides, some areas here will get heavy rainfall. There are also chances of heavy rainfall in north and coastal Odisha,” said director in charge of the Indian Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Sarat Sahu.

While in the past 24 hours, Malkangiri has got the highest rainfall of 51.4mm, Daringibadi and Bhawanipatna also got 22mm and 20mm rainfall, respectively. Moreover, Hirakud, Sambalpur and Cuttack, too, witnessed heavy downpour today.

There are chances of wind speed reaching up to 45km per hour and fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea during this phase. Besides, the official said coastal and northern districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanja and few other areas would also get rainfall.

“We were thinking of the low pressure triggering rain for next two to three days, but we noticed another low pressure being formed over the same region. Though it is in a formative stage, a clear picture will be available by tomorrow,” Sahu said.

The second low pressure will lead to incessant rain for a few more days, and the Met officials predict rainfall for next one week or more in the state. This will cause heavy rain in the coastal and south parts of the state.
