Bhubaneswar, Nov. 26: The state government has decided to set up four zonal centres for Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT).
The centres will come up in Bhubaneswar, Balasore, Berhampur and Bhawanipatna. The move is expected to make the varsity more accessible to students and affiliated colleges.
“After the zonal centres are set up, students and affiliating colleges of the region can contact their respective centres for their grievances, examination or result related matters. They will not be required to travel to Rourkela where BPUT main office is located,” a senior official of the technical education department said. The BPUT has 150 affiliated colleges spread across the state.
The BPUT students’ union and the BPUT students’ protection council had been demanding multiple centres for quite some time.
“It’s an encouraging move and we are happy that the state government has approved our demands. This will not only help us, but also help the future students of BPUT,” said vice-president of the BPUT students’ union Samapta Mohanty.
“It will be great if the department takes efforts to speed up the establishment of a central placement cell for the students’ benefit,” he said. The students have also demanded a national research centre under the varsity.
The varsity has been asked to make a detailed project report on the centres and submit by December 31, said an official.
The government has also decided that complaints related to collection of the increased capitation fee from students and parents will be addressed within seven days. In this regard, BPUT has been directed to submit its report to the government within a week. The government has asked the varsity to make its grievance redress system fully automated and use its funds to set up an auditorium, central placement cell and a teachers’ training centre in Bhubaneswar.
The department has also asked for digitalisation of lecture notes. To encourage this, Rs 10,000 incentive will be paid to teachers from the BPUT development fund. BPUT has about 150 technical colleges under it.
