Bhubaneswar: The Odisha unit of the BJP on Tuesday staged a state-wide agitation in protest against the firing at a party leader's house in Bijepur on Sunday night and targeted chief minister Naveen Patnaik and labour minister Susanta Singh over the incident.

BJP workers burnt the effigies of both the chief minister and the labour minister alleging that the former was shielding his colleague, who they claim had masterminded the firing incident to terrorise the people and BJD's political opponents.

On Sunday night, unidentified goons had fired three shots at the house of local BJP leader Manoranjan Meher in Bijepur. The BJP leaders had alleged that labour minister Singh had masterminded the firing incident.

The incident has assumed political significance as Bijepur is going to witness an Assembly by-poll.

BJP general secretary in-charge of Odisha Arun Singh said there was a big conspiracy behind the incident. "If the minister is involved in such incident, his role should be probed and action should be taken against him. But the chief minister is sitting silent and the administration is not taking any action against the culprits, because a minister is involved."

While Singh had denied the allegation on Monday calling it "baseless", he did not react on Tuesday. However, BJD spokesperson Samir Ranjan Dash on Tuesday described the BJP allegation and agitation as a "political drama". He said that the police had initiated prompt steps and formed special teams to nab the culprits. Police sources said that two persons had been detained in connection with the firing incident and the vehicle that was used in the crime was sized near Luhurachati checkgate.
