Bhubaneswar, July 18: The State Bank of India (SBI) today froze the account it had opened for star sprinter Dutee Chand, after she expressed displeasure over the bank's initiative yesterday.

SBI had on July 16 opened the account named "Support Miss Dutee Chand-Rio Olympics" and asked people to help her financially for taking part in the Rio Olympics. The bank itself had deposited an initial amount of Rs 1 lakh in the account.

However, Dutee was far from happy and communicated her displeasure to the SBI yesterday following which the authorities decided to freeze the account. Chief general manager, Odisha circle of SBI, confirmed this today.

When asked about it, Dutee said she was not in favour of this help extended by SBI and wanted to concentrate on the games ahead in Rio.

Dutee Chand is the first athlete from the state to make the cut for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in the 100-metre sprint event. She will also be the first Indian in 36 years to take part in the Olympics women's 100m. The legendary P.T. Usha had represented India in the blue-riband event in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. But, there was no qualification system during that time.

After she qualified for the blue riband event, felicitations and cash awards poured in from different quarters.

While the state government announced a cash award of Rs 1 lakh for her, the Odisha Olympic Association and Odisha Athletics Association also announced they would give her Rs 50,000 each. She was also promised a car by a leading automobile company, regardless of her performance in the Rio Games.

More significantly, chief minister Naveen Patnaik recently appointed her as assistant manager with the Odisha Mining Corporation in recognition of her feat. The appointment letter was handed over to Dutee in Delhi along with Srabani Nanda, who has also qualified for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Hailing from an extremely poor family, Dutee has overcome several hurdles in her long and glittering career. Her career had taken a nosedive after she was banned from participating in international events over a year ago after failing a hormone test.

Later, she was cleared for participation in international events by the International Amateur Athletics Federation. The sprinter was completely sidelined by the Athletics Federation of India till a year ago.
