Baripada, Feb. 17: A 44-year-old Bangladeshi national, who spent six months in Baripada Jail as an undertrial, is waiting for repatriation following his release.
Md Nazrul Haque has been staying atBaripada Town police station as a guest since Thursday after his release from jail.
"Nazrul will remain with us till the repatriation process is completed," said inspector in charge of Baripada police station Alok Ray.
Police arrested Nazrul, a native of Mollapara village in Bangladesh's Rajsahi district, on August 12 following the expiry of his 90-day tourist visa.
Human rights activist and lawyer Shanti Ranjan Behera took up his case. He was tried in a local court that delivered its judgment last Thursday. The court convicted Nazrul and sentenced him to six months' imprisonment. The court had imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on Nazrul or a month in jail.
However, the imprisonment period was adjusted against the time spent as an under trial and Nazrul was released after he deposited the fine.
Behera said: "Although he has been released from jail, he still doesn't have a valid visa. The police could arrest him anytime, anywhere. He has to stay with the police till the repatriation process is completed for his own safety. I am in touch with the Bangladesh deputy high commissioner's office in Calcutta."
"I spoke to the officials regarding his repatriation today. They said the process of establishing his identity was under way. I have urged them to speed up the process with the Centre and arrange a transit pass for Nazrul," Behera said.
