Cuttack, July 11: Police today registered a case and started investigation into allegations by a mother that her son was assaulted on the Ravenshaw University campus by a student.
One Mira Mohanty of Pabaja in Govindpur police limits alleged that her son, Biswajit Mohanty, was assaulted when he went to university to check the selection list in the geography department for admission to the undergraduate course yesterday around 12.30pm.
"The victim has already been medically examined and investigation is on. But, the accused has not been traced so far," assistant commissioner of police (zone 1) Trinath Mishra told The Telegraph today.
"However, on the basis of investigation made so far, we have arrested one of the seven to eight students involved in the assault," he said.
The arrested student has been identified as Anshuman Mohanty of Balasore, a second-year undergraduate studying physics honours. The police identified the student from the video footage of the incident, which went viral yesterday.
The FIR was lodged at Malgodown police station and only one accused has been named in it. "The case has been registered under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code," Mishra said. On conviction, it could lead to imprisonment up to two years for the accused.
In the video footage, the victim was seen surrounded by six to seven students, who beat him up after forcing him to kneel down on the ground.
The FIR has named Subrajyoti Ray, a second-year student of bachelor in business administration of Ravenshaw University, as the accused. He is reported to be from Nuapada in south Odisha.
Vice-chancellor Prakash Chandra Sarangi told The Telegraph: "It is a fit case for the police to take action as it was an outcome of personal rivalry."
"However, as I received a complaint today and as the allegation is against a student, I sent it to the disciplinary committee to examine the matter and take appropriate action," Sarangi said.
