Bhubaneswar, May 11: Giving a touch of aesthetics and incorporating new concepts of design to products, young artists from the applied art department of B.K. College of Fine Arts and Crafts showcased interesting and innovative designs for Kalpana, their annual art show.

The exhibition displayed the works of the youngsters in a wide range of media for product design as well as advertisement.

Exploring the possibilities of popularising a brand producing creative pottery for home décor or gifting purposes, Shyamakanta Pradhan came up with posters, banners and calendars that were balanced in lighting to bring out the artistic impression of the designer pottery.

Similarly, Shuvendu Shuvrajit Ghadei created a virtual men’s fashion house and designed attractive advertisements for the product for newspapers and magazines.

“The exhibition is a tradition for the applied arts department of our college wherein fourth year students prepare a campaign for various utility products through flex prints, calendars, magazine and newspaper advertisements. They also create other interesting and appealing ways of branding the different products and work on the copywriting as well,” said principal of B.K. College of Arts and Crafts, Baladev Maharatha.

The eight final year students of the department designed the shape, colours and form of products like finance houses, a range of colour products, chocolates, quick bonding adhesive, sunglasses, portable antenna with set-top box. The artists also gave fashionable names to the products.

“I named my product, a range of colours, Reyob taking ‘Re’ from red, ‘Yo’ from yellow and ‘B’ from blue, since these are the primary colours,” said Pintu Bisoyi, an artist.

“I took up the case study of a quick bonding adhesive and named it Gravit since the word indicates attraction and thus bonding.

“Since it could be considered a plain product, I had to work hard to make its campaigning interesting,” said Sasmita Swain, another artist.

The design campaigning also included visual advertisements of 40 seconds duration. These were created for each of the product displayed at the exhibition.

The videos, each of which had a touch of humour, were produced by the students of all the batches of the department. They were screened for the visitors.

“The young artists have displayed very interesting products and designs for their publicity. Even the office writing pads and visiting cards were made brilliantly,” said Abhishek Routray, a visitor.

The art exhibition held at the Regional Lalit Kala Akademi, began on May 9 and concluded on May 11.
