A female elephant (in picture) found dead in a pit near Patasahi village in the Banki forest range died due to injuries caused by a sharp weapon such as arrow, revealed the post-mortem report on Thursday. The calf, aged between five and six years, was feeding alone on standing crops, when it was killed on October 31 near Patasahi, 40km from Rourkela. It is believed that the villagers, who had been infuriated by the elephants constantly destroying their crops, gave it a chase and attacked with bows and arrows. While trying to escape, the elephant fell into a moderately deep pit and stayed there.Rourkela divisional forest officer Sanjay Swain said: "Chances of arrow injuries causing the death cannot be ruled out, because the report mentions that the animal had been hit by sharp weapons."He said the Banki ranger had been entrusted with the duty to find out the culprits behind the act.
