Bhubaneswar, Jan. 5: Students and teachers of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar, are reaching out to the younger generations to create awareness among them about various diseases, their prevention and cure.

As a part of their first attempt, young medicos from the department of pulmonary medicine organised awareness programmes in two schools on occasion of the World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Day”.

Pulmonary specialists Sourin Bhuniya and Manoj Kumar Panigrahi visited D.A.V. School, Kalinga Nagar and St Xavier’s School, Khandagiri, along with students of the AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, to educate the students of classes IX, X and XI about the causes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is commonly known as COPD, its prevention and the hazards of smoking.

“It was a very interesting session. We were really happy with the kind of interest the students showed. It is one of the best ways to pass on the message to the student community,” said a doctor.

Balasore facility

An extension centre of the AIIMS has been proposed in Balasore district with a 350-bed facility. The hospital will come up at Kalama village in Jaleswar block.

While the Centre will bear the entire cost of establishing the facility in Balasore, the state government will provide 25 to 30 acre land.

The state government has also decided to give 50 more acres at Sijua to the AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, for construction of some advanced super-specialty centres.
