Bhubaneswar, Aug 12: The last date for admission to various degree colleges has been extended to August 31 by the department of higher education (DHE).
The DHE has written to the principals of colleges, where seats are lying vacant, to admit candidates, who have passed instant or compartmental examinations of Plus Two.
“Besides those who have passed their instant exams, we have decided to allow other candidates, who were unable to take admission within the stipulated time period, to avail of this opportunity. The offline admission process will also help those students who have not get their preferred colleges,” said Anirudha Rout, joint secretary of DHE.
As many as 6,806 seats were lying vacant in 162 degree colleges included in the e-admission procedure this year. Of the 57,852 seats available in the colleges for arts, science and commerce streams, only 51,046 seats have been filled so far.
In arts, 3,510 seats were yet to be filled up while the number of vacant seats in commerce is 1,290. Similarly, 832 seats were still on offer for physics-chemistry-mathematics (PCM) combination while the number of vacant seats for chemistry-botany-zoology (CBZ) combination was 786. In case of biotechnology, 284 seats were yet to find takers.
Aspirants have welcomed the decision to extend admission dates. “I had given up hope of taking admissions this year since my instant exams results was published after the Plus Three admission process got over. Now I would not have to waste an entire academic year,” said Jyoti Prakash, an applicant.
Colleges which were grappling with the problem of filling the seats were also relieved.
“It is a good move. However, since the classes have already started, new students would need to put in an extra effort to catch up with the rest. Applications are pouring in now and so far, we have received 300 application forms,” said Dushmant Sahoo, principal of BJB (Autonomous) College, adding the vacancies came up since several students sought transfer certificates to take admission in technical courses.
The students can get information of colleges where seats are up for grabs from the DHE website (www.dheorissa.in). The colleges concerned would publish a list of eligible applicants and admissions would be completed by August 31.
