Bhubaneswar, Feb. 17: The Odisha government has banned admission of students into 22 junior colleges of the state for the session 2012-13, as they had no students admitted for the academic session 2011-12.

A list of such colleges has been released in the website of the higher education department. The decision was taken at a high-power committee meeting held under the chairmanship of higher education secretary C.S. Kumar early this month.

The debarred institutions include eight colleges from Bhubaneswar, such as Krupajal College of Science and Education, Vision College, Vidyansh Intermediate College, The New Age College, Vivekananda Residential College, St. Xavier International School, Vivekananda Institute of Social Works & Social Science, and Dibyajyoti +2 College.

The list also includes Vidya Bharati Residential College, Angul, Ayush Junior College of Commerce & Management, Balangir, Swami Vivekananda Residential College, Ganjam, Steel City Science College, Jajpur, Hemlata +2 Science College, Jharsuguda, ADS College of Science and Commerce, Jatni, Omm Shanti College of Science and Technology, Pipili, Regional Junior Science College, Puri, Swami Vivekananda Residential College, Rayagada, Pratik Science College, Sambalpur, Asian College of Science and Technology, Rourkela, Regional Junior Higher Secondary School, Dhenkanal, E.Co Railway Mixed Higher Secondary School, Jatni, and R.J.S.M.S Residential +2 Science and Commerce College, Balasore.

All these colleges were earlier asked for a showcause as to why there was no enrolment in the previous academic year. As most of them did not reply and the rest of the replies were unsatisfactory, they were prohibited from enrolling students this year, said senior officials of the higher education department.

Thirty other colleges have been issued notices to explain their poor enrolment and results by February 18. This apart, the committee also took decisions on granting of recognition and permission for opening general, professional and Sanskrit colleges in the state. Around 703 different proposals for grant of temporary and permanent recognition and opening permissions were placed for consideration. Around 112 proposals for grant of temporary recognition to new colleges and new streams were approved. Similarly, 67 proposals on grant of temporary recognition to new honours subjects in degree colleges were agreed.

The committee also allowed 72 proposals for increasing seats in junior and degree colleges. Of the total 26 cases regarding Sanskrit colleges, 18 cases were allowed.
