Biju Patnaik University of Technology
Bhubaneswar, Dec. 18: Faculty in technical colleges under the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) will be penalised if they refuse to carry out their evaluation duties.
The technical education department has asked the university to prepare a detailed guideline with adequate penal provisions for the erring teachers. This will have to be submitted by the end of December, said a senior official of the department.
The university has been facing criticism for causing delay in publication of results.
The varsity has, however, blamed the unwillingness of the faculty members, especially those from private colleges, to evaluate answer sheets as reason for the delay.
'Of 100 colleges, only 10 are run by the government. When faculty members of private colleges refuse to take part in the evaluation process, it becomes very difficult for a handful of government college faculty to complete the process in time. Therefore, it leads to delay in publication of results. Ultimately, it's the students who suffer,' said the official.
The decision to penalise the faculty members is expected to bring some change in the attitude of the teachers, who have been giving excuse such as 'other engagements and inadequate payment' to avoid being part of the evaluation process.
Besides, the university will establish a research and industrial consultancy centre that will carry out research and consultancy assignments for the industries. This will help students gain practical experience.
It has also been decided that an e-studio will be set up in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. Each department of BPUT, Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology and Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology will have at least one smart classroom and videoconferencing facilities. The universities have been asked to submit their detailed project reports by January 15.
