Bhubaneswar, Oct. 28: Painter Amit Kalla from Rajasthan is displaying his works at an exhibition titled “In the realm of nitya-anitya”, at the Odisha Modern Art Gallery here.
The artist has chosen either unusually large canvases or small paintings on paper to display at the exhibition that is on till October 31.
Kalla’s typically highlights the subject in the fore in a bold colour while waves of light shades make up the backdrop.
Most of his paintings have subtle hues and the artist keeps his canvas clutter-free. This is visible in a series of works, such as the art on a large canvas that bends towards the floor. In this work, he has highlighted the abstract image of a tree in red and the background holds images of leaves and petal-like forms and symbols in light and shade.
His works on paper are also interesting. He uses symbols resembling small Origami houses and these are bolder in the fore, but the background is a sea of varying shades of the same colour.
In some paintings, Kalla has also run a riot of colours and used a symbol similar to the sun in bright vermilion and sometimes in black.
The abstract strokes in the backdrop appear similar to the amorphous movement of clouds, making it delightful to watch the scene in odd colours such as violet and red.
“I have tried to portray the spiritual ecstasy of existence. There are things that will always be present and others that are momentary. I have tried to depict them in my works,” said the artist.
The viewers are appreciating his works.
“Many art lovers have found his works remarkable. Even we are wondering if the artist has used oil or acrylic or some other media because his texture of shades is unique,” said Tarakant Parida, well known painter and founder of Odisha Modern Art Gallery.
The exhibition was inaugurated on October 25 by eminent sculptor Sudarshan Sahoo.
