Rourkela: Police found an abandoned girl child, barely a day old, inside a deep jungle near Bonai on Saturday morning.

Villagers informed the Tikayatpalli police after they spotted the girl in the jungle of Koterpat near Bonai.

"She is barely a day old and was probably in a state of shock as she was not crying," said Bonai sub-divisional police officer Sisu Ranjan Das.

The baby was shifted to the Bonai sub-divisional hospital. "We are not sure when she was left in the jungle. If it was Friday evening, then it is a miracle she is alive because yesterday it rained and there was a hailstorm," Das said.

The police are yet to trace the baby's parents.

Sub-collector Swadhdeb Singh said: "We have shifted the baby to the Rourkela Government Hospital as the doctors here suggested the administration to take proper care of the baby."

Singh said: "We will think about handing over the baby to the Child Line after she is stable and healthy. I will personally look into the whole issue."

The government will take care of all her expenses.
