IlluminatiX, the media and public relations cell of Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB), conducted Communiqué 2014, the first-of-its-kind media conclave. The event aimed to bring together media stalwarts and future managers to reflect on the changing media scenario and its increased relevance in the lives of customers and managers alike, with a special focus on digital media. The topic of discussion for the year was “Digital Media: Empowering Customers and Facilitating Managers For The Future”. The guests opined that the future is digital media. They also highlighted how brands used ideas to propagate a notion and how an idea could act as a bridge between a product and a consumer. The conclave concluded with the launching of the XIMB blog, XIMBeats, which would chronicle the life and times of all XIMBians. Also on the college premises, the National Institute of Open Schooling Board (NIOS) had organised an orientation programme last week on the effective conduct of Personal Contact Programme (PCP).
Gold rush
The golden jubilee celebrations of Rama Devi Women’s College, Bhubaneswar, kicked off last week with an inter-college competition. Around 27 colleges from Bhubaneswar and Cuttack participated in various events such as debates in English and Odia, singing and dance contests and painting and flower arrangement competitions. The competitions will continue till August 28. Chitrangada Samantasinghar, the principal, highlighted the achievements of the college students in all walks of life over the last 50 years on the occasion.

Game for legal eagles
Young legal minds from across the country will assemble at the SOA National Institute of Law (SNIL) from September 4 to7 for the second edition of Legal Spectra, the all-India Law School Meet conducted by the institute. The meet will comprise several competitions on legal matters, literary and cultural events besides games including, moot court, parliamentary debate, client counselling, judgment writing, poster designing, quiz, dance and fashion show. In a another event, concerning law students, justice Ananga Kumar Patnaik, former judge of Supreme Court of India delivered lecture on ‘Independence of Judiciary: Collegium vs. National Judiciary Commission’ at KIIT School of Law.
Welcome freshers
School of Women’s Studies, Utkal University, celebrated Fresher’s day last week. The event began with a meeting where director Sabita Acharya along with other teachers addressed the students. Thereafter, it was time for revelry with commencement of Arambha, the freshers party. Post lunch, seniors and juniors got on the stage to showcase their extra curricular talents. Bikas Kumar Lenka and Chinmoy Routray were adjudged Mr and Miss Fresher respectively. Similarly, ASBM welcomed its ninth PGDM Batch and 8th BBA Batch in its inaugural programme held last week on its college campus. Radhakrishna Institute of Technology and Engineering (RITE), too, organised its orientation ceremony for freshers on its campus recently.

Workshop on innovation
A daylong workshop on “Outsourcing Innovation: Prospects and Challenges” was organised at NIT Rourkela. It was held in collaboration with CII, NSIC, SIDBI, MSME, FICCI and ASSOCHAM. More than 150 participants representing many corporate houses, government departments, research institutions, banks and financial institutions, entrepreneurs, participants from industry and academia attended the event. The event was organised as part of initiative of Technology Innovation and Industry Relation Centre of the Institute.
Media and education
Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal, celebrated its 22nd Foundation Day last week. On the occasion, veteran journalist Sampad Mahapatra deliberated on media education. On the occasion, winners of the IIMC foundation day essay, debate and photography competitions were also announced. Ayushman Kumar and Chidananda Jena won the first prize for English and Odia debate respectively. Chirinjibi Thapa and Soumyashree Mishra won the first prize for English and Odia essay competition respectively. Suryanshi Pandey of English journalism course bagged the first prize for photography competition.

Art for deity
Ahead of Ganesh Puja, the atmosphere at BK College of Art and Crafts, Bhubaneswar, is reverberating with joy. Students in the college are busy making a huge idol of Lord Ganesh and the occasion has brought together all budding artists and sculptors of the college. The statue of Ganesh will be put up in front of the entrance of the college building.
Strike hard
The students of Soro College sat on a dharna in front of the principal’s office on Tuesday in order to press for their demands. The demands included increase of seats in various subjects in both Plus Two and Plus Three science streams, adequate number of teachers, maintenance of girls’ common room, boys’ hostel, availability of cool drinking water, construction of boundary wall around the campus, an autonomous status for the college and prohibiting the entry outsiders on the campus and others. The students, later on, submitted a 25-point charter of demands to the principal Prahallad Charan Pati. The agitators were pacified after the principal assured them of taking appropriate steps.
Managing manuscripts
The manuscript conservation centre of postgraduate department of history of the Sambalpur University organised an awareness camp at Saraswati Sishu Vidya Mandir at Juria in Balangir district last week. Students and teachers marched in an around the villages with placards and banners highlighting the activities of the manuscript conservation centre of Sambapur University, the importance of palm leaf and its impact on society and myths associated with the palm leaf.
Monitoring the acts
Berhampur University has decided to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the Bhanja Bihar Guesthouse after goons armed with iron rods and bamboo lathi ransacked the guesthouse last week. However, the university authority has not yet lodged any FIR against anybody in Gopalpur police station.
