Bhubaneswar, June 14: Five persons, including a 14-year-old boy, suffered injuries in a freak accident at Ocean World Water Park, a private water park in Phulnakhara, 23km from here.

Witness said the incident took place after one of the cars got detached from the base of the ride and threw the revellers off. "The iron plate of the ride had rusted because of poor maintenance, so one of the cars got detached and I was thrown off the ride," said Aditya Narayan, who has suffered minor injuries.

The victims suffered minor head injuries and have been admitted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Relatives of the injured alleged callousness on part of the operator for the mishap. "I heard a loud noise and rushed to the spot, where I saw one of the cars separated from its base. The person who was operating the ride did not immediately stop it. Thankfully, no one suffered fatal injuries," said Manas Barik, the relative of a victim.

Park authorities, however, denied the allegations of negligence and said it was a mere accident. "We conduct timely maintenance of all rides and today's incident was unfortunate. We immediately rushed the victims to a private hospital for treatment," said assistant manager Dilip Parida.

In June 2014, three college students suffered injuries after they fell from a ride at BDA City Centre here.
