Berhampur: Tension prevailed on Bhanja Bihar campus of Berhampur University here on Tuesday night after two groups of students clashed with each other, leaving five students - including varsity students' union president V. Srinivas Rao - injured.
Two groups of students - one led by Rao and the other led by supporters of the students' union secretary Biswajit Lenka - clashed with each other with cricket bats and wicket stumps on Tuesday night. The injured students were rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment and were discharged from there after first aid.
"The two groups have complained against each other and university registrar Ranjan Kumar Biswal has forwarded these two complaints to the police for necessary action and to maintain law and order on the campus," said inspector in charge of Gopalpur police station Susant Kumar Sahu.
Two platoons of police were deployed on campus on Wednesday. "We are keeping a strict vigil on the situation," Sahu said.
"All steps has been taken to maintain peace on university campus," said Biswal.
Some inmates of the Rushikulya and Nagabali students' hostels, who had requested not to disclose their names, said that the clash was a sequel to a difference of opinion over the ensuing students' union election. The two groups of students who engaged in the clash were also the inmates of the two hostels. They clashed with each other after they left the hostels for their canteen to have their dinner.
On Wednesday, students gheraoed the residence of the varsity vice-chancellor demanding steps for protection and restriction on entry of non-students into the campus.
