Bhubaneswar: Two-ninety-six senior citizens have registered online in the twin cities online under police's Senior Citizen Security Cell.

The state government, on January 5, had launched the online registration scheme to ensure that senior citizens did not need to visit police stations for registration.

Calling the response "satisfactory", the police said most of senior citizens had registered themselves online instead of making physical visits to the police stations.

"We have also asked the cell's nodal officers to create awareness regarding the online registration" said a police officer.

"We are hopeful that more senior citizens will take its benefit," the cop said.

The system began in February 2009 following a spurt in crimes against the elderly in the twin cities.
