Bhubaneswar, July 30: A 10-year-old girl was killed today after a portion of the boundary wall of Khurda Road railway station collapsed on her, sparking off tension in the area.
Three persons, including the girl’s father, who were injured in the incident, are admitted at a Bhubaneswar hospital.
The deceased has been identified as Rukshana Begum. The young girl and her father Samir Khan, 35, were going on a motorcycle when the boundary wall, running parallel to the rail tracks, collapsed on them. The girl died on the spot. Samir’s brother-in-law, Hamid Khan who was on a bicycle, and another person called Dadu Khan, who was riding a moped, were injured.
Following the incident, which took place around 10am, local people blocked Jatni-Pipili road and sat on railway tracks for over five hours, demanding compensation for the victim’s family. The movement of several trains was disrupted with some of them being halted at Bhubaneswar railway station.
The local people called off the protest following an assurance of compensation from the railway authorities for the victim’s family. Train services resumed after 5pm.
Eyewitnesses said the 50-metre long wall had been tilted towards the road. “A portion of the wall fell on them, killing the girl on the spot. Others were injured. We immediately informed police, who took them to hospital,” said Jubar Ali, a local resident.
The local people alleged that despite several complaints, the railway authorities were not taking any interest in repairing the wall. “Authorities allowed dumping of construction materials on the boundary wall and it collapsed today as its base had weakened because of the rain. The remaining portion is also dangerously bent towards the road and it might claim more lives in future,” alleged Abdur Rehman, another local resident.
A railway source said the protest had delayed around six express and six passenger trains. The crowd dispersed after the railway authorities, police officers and the local leaders held discussion with the residents and family members of the deceased.
Assistant commissioner of police Jagannath Pradhan, who visited the spot, said the police had given a compensation of Rs 10,000 from its Red Cross funds while the railway authorities and the local MLA also donated funds. “The family was given a total of Rs 55,000 as compensation,” said Pradhan.
Superintendent of police of the Government Railway Police, Khurda, Bhagyadhar Behera said a meeting was held in which the railway authorities had decided to repair the wall and carry out development work in the area. “The authorities will soon take a decision to provide a job to a member of the victim’s family,” said Behera.
Sources said a case had been registered in the Railway Claims Tribunal, and accordingly, the compensation would be provided to the victims.
