10-year jail term for raping minor

Balasore: The special judge of Pocso Act court, Ajanta Sadangi, on Wednesday convicted three accused for raping a minor girl and making the video footage of the act viral in January 2015.

The judge sentenced the main accused, Chandra Mohan Tudu, 24, of Hatasahi village in Rasgobindapur police limits of Mayurbhanj district, 10 years rigorous imprisonment for the sexual assault.

The other convicts are Kartik Chandra Behera and Smruti Ranjan Jena, both 25 years old and residents of Nuagaon village in Rupsa police station limits of Balasore district.

Chandra Mohan was also fined Rs 27,000 under various sections, and in default, 13 more months term. Kartik and Smruti were awarded five years rigorous imprisonment, along with Rs 79,000 penalty, and in default, 30 more months term.

The court's special public prosecutor Pranab Panda said it was a red flag case, and the court pronounced the verdict after cross-examining 22 witnesses and exhibition of 38 documents.

"All the evidences were meticulously examined. The authenticity of the video footages pertaining to the case were cross-checked in the Central Forensic Laboratory in Hyderabad, and the assistant director of the lab deposed before the court during trial," said Panda.

Chandra Mohan had raped the 16-year-old girl of his village under a railway bridge in Nuagaon, while Kartik and Smruti captured it on their mobile phone.

The investigation into the incident was conducted by the crime branch after an advocate brought the matter to its notice.
