Bhubaneswar, March 1: One person was killed and two were injured in two separate accidents at the busy Acharya Vihar Square on National Highway 5 (NH)-5.
Sources said the employee of a private hotel of the city was killed after being run over by an unidentified vehicle at the Square yesterday morning. The man was travelling on his bicycle.
In the other incident, which occurred around 12pm, two persons were injured when a lorry loaded with cars for sale hit another car at the Square.
The 10-wheeler truck lost balance after hitting the car and crashed into the traffic post. It then careened over the road divider, blocking the road for over three hours. The police used three cranes and took more than three hours to clear the road.
Police said both accidents occurred at the same spot when there were no traffic policemen at the Square. Around 15 accidents have taken place at the Acharya Vihar Square in the last two months. While two persons were killed in these mishaps, more than 20 sustained injuries.
The number of accidents, have gone up at almost all the traffic squares on the National Highway that passes through the city. Most of these accidents occurred between 9pm and 8am when heavy vehicles such as trucks are allowed entry into the city.
The city police have put restrictions on the entry of heavy vehicles in the city during daytime to reduce the number of accidents.
