Guwahati, Jan. 18: Automobile major Maruti has recorded the highest percentage of female students in its Guwahati driving schools among 12 cities of the country where they have the highest enrolment.
Maruti has two driving schools - one in Chandmari and another in Christian Basti - here.
Both the driving schools, which were opened in 2009, have recorded a total of 4,642 paid learners, of which 2,559 were women.
Chandigarh, where Maruti has four driving schools, and Indore, where it has five, follow Guwahati with 54 per cent and 52 per cent female enrolment respectively.
"It's a known fact that the disparity between men and women is much lower here than other parts of India. Every year, a large number of women enrol in our driving schools and many of them come out as very good drivers," Avijit Sen Sharma, regional manager of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said while launching a week-long road safety workshop here today.
The percentage of female students is the lowest (32) in Bangalore, Karnataka, where Maruti has 26 schools.
Out of 1,09,913 enrolments, only 35,444 were women. Calcutta with four schools and Gurgaon with three schools follow with only 33 per cent and 36 per cent women enrolment respectively.
Maruti Suzuki, in collaboration with FM radio station Radio Mirchi, today launched Traffic School here, an initiative in which the company will roll out 10 cars, branded with vinyl covers, to traffic points where traffic policemen will be encouraged and commuters sensitised on road safety and rules.
