Guwahati, Sept. 9: Nagaland Police played a fast-paced, counter-attacking game to defeat Food Corporation of India (FCI) Sports Club — runners-up in the Guwahati Super League — by two goals to nil in the second quarterfinal of the ATPA Shield at Jorhat Stadium today.

Vizoru netted both the goals for the police team, the first with an opportunistic shot and the second off a counter-attack.

A booming shot from a police player from the right flank in the 38th minute struck the crosspiece and landed in front of Vizoru, who made no mistake in opening his team’s account.

The goal triggered a streak of aggression in the FCI men, who stepped up the pace immediately to restore parity. The police squad’s defence, however, stood the test well and looked increasingly impregnable as the minutes ticked away.

The FCI team had its best opportunity to score in the second half. Its strikers had a free run in rival territory but the slushy outfield prevented them from finishing the move.

Nagaland Police’s second goal came in the 88th minute. Vizoru clung to the ball after receiving a pass during a counter-attack and shot home to seal FCI’s fate.

Assam Rifles, Tezpur, blanked out Assam Police Blues 3-0 in the first quarterfinal yesterday to book a semifinal berth.

Playing an excellent strategic game right from the start, the paramilitary force took the lead as early as in the 11th minute through a goal by Ajit Singh.

D. Mukhim increased the margin just five minutes later with a solo effort. The scoreline was 2-0 at the end of the first half.

Abel Sema netted the third goal two minutes before the final whistle.

There will be no matches tomorrow and on Tuesday. On Wednesday, 2 Assam Special Reserve Force, Diphu, will take on Assam State Electricity Board Sports Club, Guwahati. Oil India will play Tinsukia Railway in the last quarterfinal on Thursday.

The semifinals are slated for Friday and Saturday. The final will be on September 17.
