Jorhat, April 21: Police today claimed to have arrested one of the prime accused in the April 19 railway track blast in Sivasagar district.

The police said the accused, Ajoy Gogoi, brother of dreaded Ulfa militant Akon Gogoi, had provided logistical support to the group of Ulfa rebels who carried out the blast at Hatipukhuri area between Sapekhati and Longpotia railway stations.

Railway police had registered a case in this regard.

Ajoy was picked up from his native Hauphau village under Sapekhati police station in Sivasagar district this morning. He was later produced in the court and remanded in police custody for three days.

The police said though Ajoy was not a member of the outfit, he had been maintaining close links with his brother and had helped the latter in carrying out the blast.

Police sources said Akon Gogoi alias Pradip Asom and Ganesh Lahon were the two Ulfa militants who had carried out the blast, which damaged around 2 metres of track and created a 3-foot-deep crater.

It occurred just after a pilot engine had crossed the area.Train services between Upper and lower Assam were disrupted for several hours following the blast, which took place around 9.30pm.

Ulfa had threatened to carry out such strikes in protest against the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on April 20.

Security forces had recovered a laser-fitted torch, three batteries and three empty cases of AK series rifle bullets from the blast site.
