Nagaon Feb. 12. Come March and details of tourism sites in Assam's Dima Hasao district will be matter of a click in your computer.
The hill district's tourism department plans to launch its website, showcasing the important tourist destinations of the district. It will be followed by a campaign across the state to woo tourists from other states and foreigners.
"Our plan is to include four major tourist sites - Umrangsu, Haflong, Jatinga and Maibong in one tourist circuit. All the four destinations will be included in a package. A two or three nights' halt in the hill district headquarters or at any other scheduled place could make possible visits to all the tourist destinations," said NC Hills autonomous council executive member (tourism) Kulendra Daulagupu today.
The Tourism Association of Dima Hasao, a Haflong-based NGO, will assist the local tourism department.
"The website will make it easy for all to know details of Dima Hasao - its culture and resources. They will be guided from Guwahati by tour operators. All these will be possible once we launch the website by the second week of March this year," Daulagupu said.
A Spain-based tourism company is also preparing a tourism package separately covering significant tourist destinations of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts in Assam, Dimapur in Nagaland, Imphal in Manipur besides Meghalaya. The ongoing tourist circuit includes Sampardisa village, 15km from Haflong town, a Dimasa village known for a waterfall and wildlife.
"We are creating a network for overall help of tourists. An umbrella platform, covering travel agencies, local accommodation, expert guides, district administration and autonomous council, and NGOs of Dima Hasao, will be formed to assist tourists on their Dima Hasao trip," said a council's tourism department source.
The hill district is known for its natural beauty and resources. It covers 4,890 square km area, 70 per cent of which is covered by hills. As many as 10 different communities, including Dimasa, Zeme Naga, Hmar, Hrangkhol, Kuki, among others, are scattered throughout the district which has 552 villages each of which is attractive for their uniqueness, rich tradition, culture and natural beauty.
Major tourist destinations of the district include Boraille mountain, Jatinga, Maibong which was the capital of ancient Kachari kingdom, Umrangsu and Panimur known for the waterfall and Haflong lake.
Once Dima Hasao was a major attraction for tourists. Visitors thronged Jatinga to see mysterious deaths of migratory birds in October. Growing trouble and unrest, accompanied by poor road condition, affected tourism in the district. Normality, however, returned after the two factions of Dimasa outfits laid down arms and joined mainstream politics.
Two tourism programmes - a three-day Judima festival and Boraille mountain festival - are arranged by NGOs in cooperation with the autonomous council during the last two months of the year to promote tourism in the hill district.
"A big change happened in Dima Hasao immediately after the formation of a new government in Dispur. Development now reaches the interior areas of the hill district and it helps in tourism promotion," Daulagupu said.
