Hailakandi, April 10: Ram Utsav was celebrated at Badar-purghat, 25km from the town, in Hailakandi district today.

Chants of "Jai Shri Ram" rent the air during a rally taken out as part of the nationwide Utsav that began on April 4.

The meet and rally become more significant because they took place at the Assembly segments in Hailakandi district, which are held by Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF.

Another programme was organised at the town hall here yesterday. More than 1,000 people attended the rally.

The Utsav, organised by the VHP and Bajrang Das, will conclude tomorrow.

"For the first time such a spontaneous participation was seen in a Hindu religious meet," said Ram Prasad Koiri, who arrived from Koya tea estate to participate in the rally.

Speaking at the meet, Swami Uttamananda Giri Maharaj of Calcutta said Ram mandir at Ayodhya should be constructed within this year.

Simantini Roy Katlicherra said, "We can give our life for Ram and that is why we came to attend meet."

The organising secretary of VHP's northeastern region, Purno Chandra Mondal, said the group was adamant. "We will construct Ram temple in Ayodhya and for this the Hindus should unite," he added.
