He is someone who shows and sees dreams — and a master at it. It is a different matter that not all dreams come true.

“It is my dream to visit the city during Bihu. I love the colourful Bihu dance and I even learnt it. It is, however, very sad that I have not been able to visit the place during Rongali Bihu,” rues magicianpar excellence, P.C. Sorcar Young.

Though this is the 13th visit of the wizard to the city, he never has had enough of the place. “We have a special bonding with Guwahati. It is from here that my father, the illustrious P.C. Sorcar, started his career as a magician,” Sorcar Junior said.

“I just love everything about the place. People here are extremely polite and the hospitality is the best in the world,” he gushed.

The Sorcar family members are devout devotees of Goddess Kamakhya. Every year, at least one member of the family visits the famous Kamakhya temple in the city. “I attribute all my strength and success to Goddess Kamakhya,” he said.

Sorcar Young is an epitome of success. He is not only the torchbearer of the country’s first family of magicians, but also a dancer, aviator, mathematician and sitarist.

Son of Padmashree P.C. Sorcar, Sorcar Young is the eighth in line to keep alive this unconventional yet intriguing family tradition.

“Magic runs in our blood. My father taught the nuances of this trade not just to me, but to my brother as well,” he said.

Before Sorcar Young took up magic as a full-time career, he tried his hand in different vocations.

During his college years, Sorcar Young dreamt of flying. So he joined a flying school and earned a commercial pilot’s licence. This followed him joining a private airliner for 10 years.

“The dream to be a magician was always there and my father used to say that a good magician must possess good rhythm. This prompted me to learn dance under legendary dancer Uday Shankar,” he said. This tryst with dance saw the magician in him taking a backseat. He formed his own dance troupe specialising in Indian classical ballet.

“Later I succeeded in amalgamating dance and magic in a rhythmic fashion,” he reminisced.

“India has always been the numero uno in magic. We have magicians from all over the globe flocking the country to know the tricks,” he said.

His passion to keep the flame of magic burning has seen him teaching the tricks of the trade to young and upcoming talents in his school for magic.

“Magic is not for all, only a few have it in them to be real magicians. So we train these budding magicians in our school at Calcutta,” he said.

Sorcar Young said he was considering the option of opening his second school for magic in Guwahati. “We are trying to open our second school in Guwahati as the people love magic here,” he said.

Sorcar Young is in close contact with some local magicians to establish the school. If things work out according to plans, Guwahati will soon have a world-class magic school, he said.

Sorcar Young will pass on the mantle of his family tradition to his son, Master P.C. Sorcar, who was accompanying his father. He will be the ninth generation representative of the family to carry on the tradition.

“Magic is not just about entertaining. It is also one of the most effective tools to bring souls closer and establish universal brotherhood,” Sorcar Young said.

“The three Ds — dedication, determination and discipline — help one to attain his or her goal,” the wizard signed off.
