Guwahati, May 26: A fact-finding team of the All-India Secular Forum on the process of updating the National Register of Citizens 1951 in Assam today said it would approach the authorities in Delhi and Dispur to rectify the alleged discrepancies in the exercise.
The team, comprising academicians, intellectuals and social workers, has been visiting Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, Morigaon, Baksa, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Kamrup (metro) districts since May 22 to get the people's feedback on the NRC update.
The forum is a non-political platform to create awareness on socio-political issues.
"We found that everyone welcomed the update. But the people have grievances against certain discrepancies associated with the process. For example, they are worried about discrepancies in the name and age recorded in the NRC 1951, voter list and documents related to legacy data," Hafiz Ahmed, a member of the team, said.
"Though the Assam government told the Supreme Court that it would publish or upload all voter lists from 1951 to 1971 on the NRC website, the initiative has not been taken. Some voter lists are missing and the people are finding it difficult to search their names or that of their forefathers," he added.
Ahmed, who is also the president of Char Chapori Sahitya Sabha, told reporters here today that they would approach the authorities, including the Supreme Court and the Registrar General of India, to remove discrepancies in the NRC update.
Irfan Engineer, director of the Centre for Study of Society and Secularism, who headed the team, said the number of NRC sewa kendras in some districts was inadequate.
