Hailakandi, Jan. 23: Sonai Football Academy defeated Ramnagar Sangai Club by 34-30 points in the kabaddi final of the district rural sports meet today.
The final match proved a cliffhanger with a 2,000-strong crowd watching the match anxiously. The three-day meet was organised by the Tarapur Friends Club at the Town Club ground in Silchar.
In the volleyball final, Dudhpatil Part V defeated Cachar Sporting Club by 25-16, 25-20 points. Earlier in the first semi-final, the runners-up Cachar Sporting Club defeated Nehru Club by 25-20, 25-20 points. In the second semi-final, Dudhpatil Part V defeated Banabihari Club by 21-25, 25-10, 25-11 points.
The winners of the volleyball final received the Batu Dasgupta Running Shield and cash Rs 1,001. In the volleyball event, Arpan Singha of the winning team was adjudged best player.
In the kabaddi event, Moni Singha of Sangai Club won best player title. The superintendent of police, Cachar, Satyen Gogoi, was present during the prize-distribution ceremony as chief guest. The district sports officer of Cachar, Dilip Laskar, also attended the ceremony.
Cachar deputy commissioner Gautam Ganguly had inaugurated the three-day long event. Rumi Nath, MLA, was also present in the inaugural function.
Loktak football
Manipur Brothers Sporting Union had a 2-1 win against Tiddim Road Unique Gamy Players Union in the opening match of the Loktak Football Trophy 2008 played at Moirang in Bishnupur District, reports our correspondent from Imphal.
