Seeds sail into last 8 - Assam boys beat statemates, move up

Guwahati, May 22: The second day of the OIL-AITA Super Series (under-14) Tennis Championship concluded without any major upset on the girls’ and boys’ courts, as seeded players sailed into the quarterfinals today.

Four Assam lads, Rupam Gogoi, Sidhant Deka, Manab K. Chakma and Trinayan Talukdar marched into the last-eight stage along with other seeded players in the tournament. All four got the better of compatriot opponents.

Gogoi defeated Sushanta Mohanty of National Tennis Academy (NTA) 6-1, 6-2, while Manab Chakma made short work of Kunwar Singh Tater 6-1, 6-0. Sidhant Deka beat Abhinash Kaushik 6-1, 6-2 and Trinayan Talukdar outplayed Madhurjya Dutta 6-2, 6-2.

Top seed Surya Pavan of Andhra Pradesh ousted Alok Kr Tripathi of Assam 6-3, 6-4 to book a berth in the quarters. Suraj Kanwar of Gujarat sailed past Shreedhar Gaggar of West Bengal 6-2, 6-3. The other two quarterfinalists — Vinod Gowda of Karnataka and Ansu K. Bhuyan of Orissa — marched past Assam’s Arunanshu Borthakur 6-0, 6-0 and Vilasier Khate of NTA 6-4, 6-2.

On the girls’ court, Assam girls Pratiksha Sharma and Anangsha Alomyan went down to top seed Anushka Bhargava of Andhra Pradesh 1-6, 1-6 and fifth seed Seeulee Upadhaya of Orissa 0-6, 2-6, respectively.

Third seed Surya Tejaswani (Andhra Pradesh) dismissed Srijita Ghosh of West Bengal 6-0, 6-2. The other girls who moved into the quarters, include Gauri Baindoor (Maharashtra), Spurthi Mallampati (Andhra Pradesh) and Pooja Kudesia (Madhya Pradesh) who beat Mallika Saharia of Delhi (6-4, 6-3), Niyati Aggarwal of Delhi (6-2, 6-2) and Angana Mukherjee of West Bengal (6-0, 6-2) respectively.

Play was held up for about two hours owing to a heavy downpour in the afternoon.
