
Guwahati: The 2nd Sailadhar Baruah Memorial Film Awards will be given to winners in six categories by the Sailadhar Memorial Trust to commemorate the death anniversary of the renowned filmmaker on January 10 at the district library here.
The six categories include best film, director, actor (male and female), music director and technician. The award will comprise Rs 50,000, a certificate and a memento for the best film, Rs 25,000, a certificate and memento for the best director and Rs 20,000 each, certificates and mementos for the best male and female actors, the best music director and technician.
Altogether 12 films in Assamese, Bodo, Karbi, Rabha, Mising and other local languages of the state censored between January 1 and December 31, 2016 are in the reckoning for the awards.
Maj Rati Keteki, directed and produced by Santwana Bordoloi, was chosen as the best film, Narayan Seal the best director for Mising film Li: Len, Anurag Saikia the best music director for his work in Dikchow Banat Palaax and Maj Rati Keteki while Debajit Bayan emerged as the best technician in sound designing of Haanduk. The best actor (male) award will go to Mintu Baruah for his work in Dooronir Nirola Poja, while Pranami Borah was adjudged the best actor (female) for Sonar Baran Pakhi.
Two Jury's Special Mention award will be conferred on Haanduk director Jaicheng Jai Dohutia and child actor in Maj Rati Keteki, Mahendra Rabha.
The awardees were chosen by a five-member jury led by veteran director-cum-cinematographer Arup Manna. The other members were actress Runu Devi, music composer-cum-sound recordist Jatin Sharma, director-editor Ranjit Das and journalist-cum-film critic Munin Bayan.
Trust secretary Ranjit Das said, "We have added two awards in the second edition. We are planning to add two more next year which will be a grander affair. We are planning to include films from the entire Northeast by 2020."
Veteran actor Nipon Goswami and director Dara Ahmed have been invited as chief guests. Actor Badal Das and director Munin Baruah will be felicitated.
"Sailadhar Baruah is more famous among the older generation for his contributions to Assamese cinema. The new generation is not aware of the filmmaker who wanted to transform society through films," said assistant secretary Manoram Gogoi.
