Jorhat, Feb. 19: A 25-year-old Russian girl, who was allegedly brought to Dibrugarh by a local youth with the promise of marriage but was abandoned, has been rescued by Shradha, a Dibrugarh district-based NGO.

The incident came to light when the youth, Samir Rahman, admitted the girl, Katrina Rezchikova, to a mental hospital in Dibrugarh.

Samir had met Katrina while he was studying medicine in Moscow. The girl has alleged that Samir bought her a return ticket to Moscow and left her at the Dibrugarh airport on February 16, as his family did not accept her. She, however, refused to return as her family would not accept her. The NGO is in contact with the Russian embassy and is putting pressure on Rahman to marry her.

Police said they were monitoring the case and Samir would either have to marry her or a case will be registered against him by the NGO. The NGO is mulling lodging a complaint of human trafficking. 'If this is done, Rahman will have to bear the consequences. It is better that he keeps his promise,' a police source said.
