Guwahati, Dec. 22: A special central scheme will provide a much-needed boost to the sports and civic infrastructure in Assam's Karbi Anglong.

Under special assistance of the central plan scheme 2015-2016, two multipurpose sports complexes - one each Diphu in East Karbi Anglong and Donkamokam in West Karbi Anglong - and a multipurpose auditorium at Hamren will come up by the end of 2017.

Roads and the banks of the Diphu river will also get a facelift under the scheme.

The Centre in October released Rs 94.11 crore under the scheme based on a proposal by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. The detailed project report had been submitted to the Centre in September.

"The state-of-the-art Karbi Anglong Sports Association sports complex covering 36 bighas at Diphu will have a floodlit football stadium, an athletics track, galleries, pavilion, tennis courts, an indoor stadium housing badminton and table tennis courts, swimming complex, boxing arena, besides buildings for housing players, guests, a cafeteria and shops," J.N. Khataniar, chief consultant of the project, told The Telegraph.

A sum of Rs 45 crore has been allocated for the first phase of work and Rs 15 crore for the second phase.

Sources said preliminary construction started in the last week of November.

"Work at the sports complex covering about 22 bighas at Donkamokam is being carried out simultaneously, for which Rs 25 crore and Rs 13.56 crore has been allocated for the first and second phases. The infrastructure coming up in Donkamokam will be similar to the sports complex in Diphu," Khataniar said.

The central hall-cum-auditorium at Hamren in West Karbi Anglong will be built at a cost of Rs 10 crore.

"Besides, Rs 14.11 crore will be utilised for development of roads in Diphu town and for a beautification drive under the town committee. The green drive will also involve a campaign against encroachments beside the Diphu river," he said.

The two sports complexes, according to Khataniar, who had offered consultancy in a similar project in Golaghat last year, are likely to be ready in about a year.

This is the first time Karbi Anglong will have two modern sports complexes of this scale.

Sports organisers said the infrastructure will make Karbi Anglong an important destination for national and international tournaments.

"The stadiums have been a long-standing need for Karbi Anglong which has a lot of talent in sport. The infrastructure will not only provide a platform for budding footballers, cricketers and other sportsmen but also help the district host more national or international events in the coming years. For over five years, we have not hosted a major tournament," Pankaj Terang, member of the Diphu-headquartered Karbi Anglong Sports Association, told The Telegraph.
