Imphal, July 7: Rishav Brahma of Assam emerged on top to claim the singles title of the AITA Under-16 Boys' Championship Series Tennis Tournament, 2016, played at Officer's Club, Lamphelpat, here today.
In the final, Rishav defeated Hashit Srujan Gummuluru of Andhra Pradesh 6-1, 7-5. There was no looking back for the Assam boy after breaking the opponent's service as he clinched the first set rather easily. However, in the second set, Hashit tried to gather momentum but faltered in the end as Rishav took the set 7-5 for the victory.
En route to the final, Rishav beat compatriot Krikanta Sarma by 2-0 sets while Hashit beat Karan Baruah Das of Assam by 2-0 sets as well in the semi-finals.
In the under-16 girls' singles final, Kristi Boro of Assam got the better of statemate Eva Raj Sah by 2-0 sets. The first set was a nail-biting one as both players had to sweat it out with long volleys, pushing the game to the tie- break where Kristi prevailed 7-6 (7-4). The second set proved to be a cakewalk for Kristi as she broke her opponent's service for a 6-1 win.
Kristi had claimed the girls' doubles title along with her partner Harshita Borah. Altogether 16 boys and 11 girls from Manipur, Assam, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha participated in the meet.
AITA Talent Series: A three-day All-India Talent Series for under-14 boys and girls' will be held at Officer's Club, Lamphelpat, from August 29.
Football: The All-Manipur Football Association said 15 referees, including four women, have passed the referees fitness test and grade examination held on July 3 at the Khuman Lampak main stadium. The referees are M. Roshini Chanu, N. Sumati Devi, M. Radhapiyari Devi, E. Debala Devi, M. Bidyaswar Singh, L. Shantikumar, M. Shankar, L. Sanjoy, L. Nanao, Yulung Lungsu, Leiya Ragui, H. Themreishang, Y. Samarjit, A. Ratan and Y. Hemanta Singh.
Cricket: Assam Yellow were 48 for one in their second innings against Assam Red at stumps on Day One of the Assam Cricket Academy Under-19 Challenger Trophy organised by Assam Cricket Association at D.N. Singha Stadium, Goalpara, today.
