Guwahati, May 2: Vasco Sports Club, Goa, became the fourth side to confirm their berth in next year’s edition of the first division I-league after defeating Pune FC 4-3 in a crucial outing at Nehru Stadium here yesterday.

Vasco, having tallied seven points from four matches in the ongoing second division ONGC I-league, now joins Chirag United, Mumbai FC and Mohd. Sporting to qualify for the elite league next season.

F. Lal Rozama drew first blood for Pune FC in the 22nd minute. Gift Raikhan set the ball off a floater from Je Je Lalpekalua, which Rozama simply pushed into the net to take the lead.

Their celebration was shortlived as Vasco skipper Luciano Sobrosa restored parity just two minutes later by pushing in a Jose Colaco header off a Kamal Thapa flag kick. Vasco took the lead in the 27th minute when Colaco headed in a corner kick from Menino Fernandes.

In the second half, the Pune men came back with renewed vigour, and just few minutes later Lalpekalua converted a penalty kick to score the equaliser.

Bungo Singh fashioned the lead once again for the Pune men in the 68th minute.

The Goa men found the equaliser within five minutes when striker Jefferson Rocha pushed in the ball into the net after Pune custodian Narasimhan Balaji fumbled a save off a powerful shot from Agnelo D’Souza.

The team from Goa had the last laugh with Menino Fernandes netting the match-winning goal in the 80th minute shooting in a spot kick straight over the human wall into the net.

In the second match of the day, Mumbai FC inflicted a 2-0 defeat on Indian Bank. Abhishek Yadav scored both the goals for the Mumbaikars ruffling the net once in both halves of the drab one-sided affair.

Mohd. Sporting will meet Vasco SC and Chirag United will face Mumbai FC tomorrow.
