Silchar, June 15: The Karimganj PWD department (rural roads) has ordered a probe into the alleged anomalies in the construction of Singaria-Loharpara road, about 73km from here.
Following allegations by residents about shoddyconstruction of the 6.85km road, PWD executive engineer (rural roads), Karimganj division, Rafique Uddin Choudhury, and assistant executive engineer of Nilambazar subdivision Samad Ali inspected the construction work today and expressed unhappiness over it.
Choudhury said they found the work was not following the necessary guidelines and a probe has been ordered.
Nearly Rs 4.29 crore, under the chief minister's special package for Barak Valley for 2013-14,was released by the state government for the construction. Choudhury said the work was supposed to be completed by December 2016, according to the work order.
He cited inclement weather as a major reason behind the tardy pace of work.
Ali said the inspection was conducted on the basis of complaints by the residents and it was found that the construction was not being done properly. Some rectifications are required and the workers have been instructed about that.
Residents alleged that concreteblocks were being installed just by covering the road with soil. The metalling process, a requisite, was not being done. They blamed the contractor for the poor quality of the work and alleged that because of his negligence commuters were suffering.
The Singaria-Loharpara road is near National Highway 8 in Singaria. The population, comprising all the villages along the road, is around 20,000.
The foundation stone for construction of the road was laid by former minister Siddeque Ahmed in 2013.
