Imphal, Oct. 14: N. Premjit Singh made it to the quarter-final of the Men’s Open singles of the State Open Tennis Championship at Officers’ Club, Lamphelpat.
Seasoned campaigner Premjit Singh got the better of Rk. Pritam Singh in a 8-3 game in the best of 15 games en route to the quarter-finals.
Thangminlien, who had a hard game against Birchandra, survived with a 8-7 victory to make it to the quarter-finals.
In the quarter-finals of the women’s open singles, S. Sonia Devi outplayed Monika Devi 4-0, 4-0 en route to the semi-final.
Other semi-finalists include Th. Bunty who beat Linthoi 4-1, 4-1, H. Puja overcame Roshnee Devi 4-1, 4-1 and Kh. Suchitra Devi beat Vandamani Devi 4-0, 4-2.
In the men’s open doubles event, the pair of Pradip and Iboyaima Singh overcame Raju and his partner Imoba Singh 6-3, 6-1 to move into the next round.
Tomba Singh and his partner Ranjit beat Panmei and Gokul 7-5, 7-5 while Bona and Pritamkumar beat Homen and Amarjit Singh 6-0, 6-1.
Boxer lauded: Indian Boxing Federation coach Ramanand Singh Rajbor is confident that his pupil Shiva Thapa will make it to the London Olympics next year.
“There are five vacant slots in Shiva’s weight category (bantam weight) in the Asian qualifiers to be held in Kazakhstan a couple of months before the Olympics next year. So even if he makes it to the semi-finals, he should be able to make the cut for the Games,” the 10-time national champion, who had bagged several medals for India in world events, said.
