Guwahati, Sept. 21: Assam State Electricity Board Sports Club edged past Comptroller and Auditor General, Delhi, by a solitary goal to seal their place in the semi-finals of the 63rd Bharat Ratna Lokopriya Bordoloi Trophy Football Tournament at Nehru Stadium here today.

In a keenly-contested match on a slushy turf, the 40th-minute goal for the powermen ensured their progress into the semi-final while the visitors failed to capitalise on their share of chances.

Having found the ball at his feet off a pass from Jessy Vanlalmuana, Sanatumba Sharma’s lobbed attempt on target found the back of the net in the 40th minute.

Sharma’s strike from the edge of the box managed to get past a forwarding CAG custodian Manveer Singh.

After the lemon break, CAG went on the offensive but failed to gain a foothold.

Harminder Singh decided to go for the target from around 30 yards in the 51st minute. However his powerful attempt failed to trouble the ASEB glovesman Daoga Brahma as the ball went quite wide of the target.

The visitors came close to equalising in the 61st minute.

Edisson’s attempt from inside the box saw the ball missing the target.

Daoga Brahma managed to pull out a fine save by fisting the ball out to safety off a power-packed shot by Reegan in the 70th minute.

CAG were reduced to 10 men after Sanjeev Maria was sent off the ground for unsporting behaviour.

Northeast Frontier Railway Sports Club will play Assam Rifles in the second quarter-final tomorrow.
