Aizawl, Aug. 13: A member of the Delimitation Commission has assured the people of Mizoram that their interests would be kept in mind while adjusting the state’s Assembly constituencies.

The state’s sole representative in the commission, P. Rohmingthanga, an IAS officer, told the media here today that the authorities were working on a feasible model for the delimitation of constituencies .

Rohmingthanga said the commission would take all factors into account while making adjustments, if any.

Political parties and students’ organisations in the state had recently protested the commission’s alleged move to dissolve one constituency each from Lunglei and Mamit districts while creating two new ones in Aizawl, based on the 2001 census figure.

A state Congress resolution yesterday also objected the proposed delimitation move.

Asked if the protest by NGOs and political parties would have any effect on the commission’s decision to re-adjust the Assembly constituencies, Rohmingthanga said it would take into consideration all objections before arriving in a decision.

“The rules for the delimitation is not inflexible. Objections voiced by NGOs and political parties will be considered if there is enough substance in these. As the re-adjustments would be carried out based on the population according to the 2001 census, a flexibility of 10 per cent on the population strength would be available,” he said.

According to the latest census report, each constituency in Mizoram needs to have around 22,000 voters, which is the total population divided by the number of Assembly constituencies in the state.

Rohmingthanga was appointed as a commission member in February to represent the state. Mizoram does not have an election commission of its own.
