Oct. 3: Reports of two explosives experts of the banned Ulfa being sighted in the city prompted police to make public announcements on the streets today, seeking the residents? help to catch the duo.

The two militants ? Tapan Das and Sandhya Roy ? were spotted somewhere within the jurisdiction of the Chandmari police station during afternoon hours, intelligence reports said.

?Tapan Das, a tall fair-complexioned guy with silver eyes, was spotted with Sandhya Roy, who is of dark complexion,? an official said.

City superintendent of police Hiren Chandra Nath, soon after receiving the information, called up all police stations and put them on maximum alert. Chandmari police immediately took out a vehicle and started announcing at public places.

Nath has also instructed other police stations to carry out similar exercises at their respective localities.

Additional superintendent of police Bibekananda Das said according to the intelligence reports, both the militants sneaked into the city with a purpose to carry out subversive activities like blowing up some vital installations.

Sources said Tapan Das is a hardcore militant trained in Bhutan while Sandhya Roy helps in carrying bombs and other explosives to different places.

The police said the duo had successfully carried out subversive activities in Upper Assam, especially at oil installations.

A series of blasts across the state during the last 24 hours has forced the police to throw a massive security blanket and announce several vital installations, including the Saraighat bridge, Gauhati Refinery, railway station and Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, as the most vulnerable to militant attacks. Nath said police would not take any risk and an alert had been sounded across the city. ?Guwahati is always an alluring target for the militants to get massive publicity. But the police are ready to foil any such sabotage attempt,? Nath said.

Two security personnel had died and more than 10 people injured during two bomb blasts near Gauhati Refinery on August 26 night. The refinery blast was the fourth Ulfa-triggered explosion since April.

On April 14, a five-year-old boy and a 30-year-old man were killed while 14 persons were injured when suspected Ulfa rebels carried out a grenade attack at Ganeshguri, close to the high-security Dispur capital complex.

Four policemen and 10 civilians were among the injured.

An explosion inside a public urinal at the ASTC bus stand in Machkhowa on July 15 injured a civilian. On August 7, a policeman was killed when suspected Ulfa militants lobbed a grenade near a vegetable market at Kedar Road in Machkhowa. Two policemen and a civilian were injured in the blast.
