Guwahati, May 22: The Arunachal Pradesh government's recommendation of Everester Anshu Jamsenpa's name for the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, the highest accolade for adventure sports in the country, got a push after the ace mountaineer scripted a world record of double ascent in five days.

The record summits also fetched Anshu a job equivalent to that of a gazetted officer in the Arunachal Pradesh government.

Youth affairs and sports director D.K. Dinglow congratulated Anshu on her feat. He said the state government has already approved her name, along with that of three others, for the post of adventure promotion officer (APO) for excellence in mountaineering and adventure sports.

The directorate of youth affairs and sports had announced its decision that it would recommend the name of the mother of two for the Tenzing Norgay Award a couple of days after she completed her fourth ascent on May 16. Dinglow today confirmed the directorate has already recommended the Bomdila-based mountaineer's name for the award.

"TNA award is equivalent to the Arjuna award in the field of adventure sports and going by her achievement, the youth affairs department would also award her with cash incentives," said Dinglow. However, he did not mention the amount. He added that the record she has scripted was definitely going to boost her prospects for the award.

Tenzing Norgay Award for outstanding achievements in the field of adventure on land, sea and air is awarded by the Union youth affairs and sports ministry and is conferred by the President, along with Arjuna awards, at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi in the month of August every year. It comprises a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh and a certificate of honour.

Though Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu has been out of station and is yet to issue a congratulatory message on behalf of his government, accolades flew in thick and fast from all quarters.

Arunachal Olympic Association president Padi Richo congratulated Anshu and claimed that her achievement was "incredible". "What she has done is unbelievable and that, too, after being a mother of two. She is an inspiration for the entire Northeast in particular and the country as whole," said Richo, who further appealed the government to reward the mountaineer with the highest reward and recognition possible.

Satyen Sarma, one of the main promoters of mountaineering in Assam, who is also a family friend, joined Richo in appreciating the Everester. "It is a feat next to impossible. She has done it only because of her dedication and simplicity. She is an inspiration for upcoming generations. Besides, there is a saying that behind every successful man there is a woman. It is exactly the opposite in her case. There is a man, her husband Tsering Wange, behind her success. He is also as dedicated as Anshu in promoting her career."

Assam mountaineer Pranoy Bordoloi, who is a fellow mountaineer having made two abortive attempts, echoed Sarma saying: "This is a marvellous achievement. Normally, it takes two days for one to return from the summit to base camp and at least a week to recuperate before making a second attempt. But she has done it in five days. She is confidence personified because she pays royalties for double summit every time she goes on an expedition to the Everest. And she has made it twice."
