Guwahati, Sept. 26: There was nothing extraordinary about the oath-taking ceremony at Gauhati High Court today, but for the fact that one man created history of sorts.

Pranoy Kumar Musahary became the first high court judge from the Bodo community, comprising 1.2 million people.

Musahary, an advocate, was administered the oath of office as additional judge of the high court by Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Jasti Chelameswaras.

“I feel very happy to have become a judge of the honourable Gauhati High Court, where I have practised as a lawyer for long,” Musahary told The Telegraph after the ceremony.

“Since our Bodo community is educationally backward and in a socially disadvantaged position, I feel that more people from our community should take up the legal profession as it will make them conscious of their legal rights and they will also be able to serve the downtrodden sections of society,” he added.

Mushary was a senior government advocate and public prosecutor of Assam from February 19, 2003 till Monday when his resignation was accepted.

Prior to his appointment as senior government advocate and public prosecutor, he also served in the same position in Arunachal Pradesh.

He had also served as the standing counsel of the Bodoland Autonomous Council, the Assam Plain Tribes Development Corporation Limited and was also a member of the State Law Commission.
