Dibrugarh, Dec. 11: Dibrugarh can look forward to a cultural feast with the National School of Drama (NSD) scheduled to stage five plays at the India Club auditorium as part of the four-day drama festival organised by Natyacharcha, a local drama group, from December 21.

The plays to be staged are Vijay Tendulkar’s Ghasiram Kotwal, Dario Fo’s Chukainge Nahi, Anamdas Ka Potha by Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Kishan Chand’s Ek Violin Samandar Ke Kinare and Krishna Baldev Vaid’s Uska Bachpan.

“This is the first time that the entire NSD team is coming to perform in Dibrugarh and we hope that it will be a treat for the connoisseurs of culture,” said Munin Bhuyan, director of Natyacharcha. He added that preparations were on for the festival and that the NSD team with its technicians and directors would reach here on December 20.

Natyacharcha, which has staged numerous plays since its inception in 1983, had recently organised a monthlong workshop on the technical aspects of drama for the young amateur directors of the state.

The NSD repertory company was formed in 1964-65 by E. Alkazi with a few actors. It later expanded into a larger group of actors, musicians and technicians, mainly drawn from graduates of the NSD, New Delhi. Over the years, the repertory has produced many plays ranging from stylized musicals and realistic contemporary works of Indian drama to translations and adaptations of foreign language plays.

“One such play will be Nobel prize-winning Italian dramatist Dario Fo’s Chukainge Nahi, adapted by Amitabh Srivastava and directed by Bhanu Bharti,” said Bhuyan. Bharti, an NSD graduate, has over 50 productions to his credit, including Chandrama Singh Urf Chamku and Ras Gandharva. Some of his productions are based on the performances and rituals of the Bhils of Rajasthan.
