Militants release hostage

Suranjan Das, a businessman who was abducted by suspected Dima Halam Daoga (DHD) militants from the Tumpreng area last Monday, was released in Hojai town at 4.30 am on Wednesday. he DHD had served an extortion notice to him several times before he was abducted.

Heroin seized

A BSF jawan of the water wing, on a tip-off, seized heroin worth Rs 24 crore on Tuesday night from a Nilukhiya-bound country boat in Dhubri.

Suspension

Rahman Ali Shiekh, principal of Bauskata MESchool, and Abul Hussain Miah, principal of Dakhin Salmara Gossaidubi ME School, were suspended on Wednesday for negligence of duty and misappropriation of funds released by the Sarba Sikha Abhijan programme.

Tax axe

The number of assessees filing their returns of income in Manipur, Nagaland and four districts of Assam — Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat and Karbi Anglong — have increased in recent years and likewise the budget collection too had gone up. This was announced by M.K. Singh, commissioner of income tax, in Jorhat.

Assembly

Assam governor Lt Gen. (retd) Ajai Singh has summoned the next session of the Assam Legislative Assembly from July 12.

Bodies found

Police on Wednesday dug up the remains of two persons, Jatin Brahma and his brother Arga, who were allegedly killed by NDFB militants three-and-a-half years ago in their own residence at Rupnagar in Kokrajhar district.

Man killed

Balla Prasad Agarwala, a prominent businessman of Fakiragram town, was killed by unidentified miscreants on Wednesday.

Accused held

Nagaon police on Wednesday arrested the eleventh accused in the murder of an autorickshaw driver whose body was found in Kopili river a few days back.

Girls rescued

Guwahati police rescued three girls from a Guwahati-bound night bus at Khetri on Wednesday. The girls were kidnapped by three youths from Jonai of Dhemaji district.
