Ulfa rebel arrested

Guwahati, May 8: Police arrested an Ulfa rebel identified as Arup Deka, 20, from Ganeshpara today. The police said Deka is a member of Ulfa’s 709 battalion and suspected to be involved in several subversive activities, including the blast at Jyotikuchi. The accused hails from Musalpur in Baksa district.

Snatched

Guwahati: Two motorcycle-borne youths snatched a bag containing Rs 3 lakh from G. Buragohain in the Beltola area on Friday.

Threat

Guwahati: The Cotton College Union Society on Friday threatened to disrupt the admission process for the new academic session starting in June to protest Dispur’s refusal to approve nine infrastructure projects for the college.

Governor

Guwahati: Assam Governor S.C. Mathur returned here on Friday after undergoing medical treatment at Escorts Hospital in New Delhi. The governor was admitted to the army hospital at Basistha after he complained of chest pain on April 28 and later shifted to Delhi for further treatment.

Apprehended

Guwahati: Police on Thursday night apprehended five Adivasi National Liberation Army (ANLA) rebels from the Harisingha area in Udalguri district. Uldaguri superintendent of police A.K. Tiwari said the group had demanded money from a businessman and had come to collect it when they were caught.

Identified

Guwahati: The two Ulfa militants killed in an encounter at Sivasagar district on Thursday have been identified as Jitu Changmai and Linton Ingti. Jitu hails from Sivasagar while Kinton is from Tinsukia.

Girl dies

Guwahati: A 16-year-old girl, Sumi Kalita, died after falling into a ditch near her residence at Meghali Path in Kachari Basti on Friday.
